Psara

Psara
On the west of Chios there are two small islands. Psara and Antipsara. (The latter is uninhabited).
Psara - called Psyra in the ancient times - developped a merchand fleet since the mid - eighteenth century and during the Revolution of 1821, it played an active role

Fire-ships were sailing against the Turkish fleet and destroying it, under the command of brave captains from this small island, such as Kanaris, Apostolis, Nicodimos, Vratsanos and many others. Psara suffered the revenge and rage of the Turks who destroyed completely the island, slaughtering the whole population, despite their heroic resistance, on the 24 June 1824.

The few inhabitants, who managed to escape in some ships, found shelter in Monemvassia (Peloponese) and, later on, after the liberation of Greece, they came to Eretria (Evoia), where they built "New Psara", to remember "Old Psara" of their native island. Many of its inhabitants returned later to Psara to live permanently up to now. In the first 100 years after the liberation of Greece, Psara had the privilege to have two members of Parliament, in aknowlegement of its offer to the ideal of freedom and democracy. Nowadays this privilege does not exist. It was revoked in 1946, to follow the usual election system, but, to honour, Psara, however small, is a Municipality.
