Karfas Beach
|
|
On the way out of Chios to the
south, one can follow the street along the coast and the area
Kontari, past the airport, leading to the sandy beach of Karfas
(at 6 km from Hora).
It is an excellent sandy beach, which, unfortunately, due
to the exrteme and uncontrolled touristic development lately,
has lost its natural beauty. |
|
After Karfas we come to Agia Ermioni with its small natural
port, a shelter for fishing boats. A little further off
is the beach of Megas Limnionas and, after that, the road
leads to Thimiana.
|
|
The area is famous for its many mines of the characteristic
yellow-brown stone. This is the material used to build most
of the mansions at Kambos as well as many of the older churches
of the island. Typical of this use is the central church
of Thimiana, Agios Efstratios, which is one of the biggest
of Chios, wholly constructed of Thimiana stone and of late
- Byzantine architecture.

The Mostra
Parade at Thimiana
|
|
The next village is Nehori, which is quite new, apart from
its central church, Panagia (=Virgin Mary) which proves
the important local traditional architecture at the end
of the previous century.
Quite near Nehori, on the left, along the main road, we
can visit the monastery of Agios Minas, closely connected
with the history of Chios.
In April 1822, after the desperate resistance of the inhabitants
who had refuged there seeking shelter, the massacre of about
3.000 people by the Turks took place. Athough the church
has been renewed twice (after 1881 and 1950), the relics
of that terrible bloodshed are still visible. The nearest
beach from here is that of Agia Fotia and of Agios Yannis
which is very nice and clean.
The first "mastic village" on the way south is
Kalimassia, at about 13 km from Hora. It used to be one
of the most important medieval villages but it was competely
destroyed in the 1881 earthquake and rebuilt later. The
local Handicraft Association employs women who make excellent
embroideries.
Next we come to Katarraktis village, which was built after
the earthquake of 1881, near the shore. Next we come to
Patrika and Kalamoti which was also built in the usual medieval
style. Here, the local accent of speech is quite different
from that of the other villages, with elements from the
ancient dialect of Homer. Worth visiting is the church of
Panagia Sikelia, a byzantine church of the 13th century
with nice ceramics.

EMPORIOS, CHIOS |
|
Emporios
is known for its shore with the "black pebbles"
created by the volcano. On the hill of Profitis Ilias
there was a temple of Minerva (8th c. B.C.) Findings
can be sheen in the Archaeological Museum in Chios.
Inside the "Volcano" restaurant there is
a permanent exhibition of paintings.

Komi
|
|
Komi is the nearest
beach, at 3.5 km to the south, quite sheltered from the north
winds and ideal for swimming. The fields around it are extremely
fertile; the various vegetables grown here, especially the
water - melons, are very tasty. As you face the sea, on the
right, there is a hill with the small church of Profitis Elias
at the top from where you can have a wonderful view of the
sea and the fields. |
